How to Create an Eco-Friendly Dental Care Routine

How to Create an Eco-Friendly Dental Care Routine

Right now, the world is more focused on environmental issues than ever before, and we should be doing everything we can to ensure we live an eco-friendly lifestyle. With one of the most consistent parts of our daily routine being dental care, this is a pretty good place to start. To create an eco-friendly dental care routine:

1. Switch to a Bamboo Toothbrush

Switching to a bamboo toothbrush is one of the easiest sustainable dental swaps you can make. Did you know that more than 1 billion plastic toothbrushes are discarded worldwide every year, which end up polluting the earth in landfills or worse, filling our precious oceans, posing a risk to marine life. These figures are truly devastating, which is why more and more people are choosing to use bamboo toothbrushes over plastic ones.

Not only do bamboo toothbrushes reduce waste, they are fully biodegradable, meaning they easily break down in landfills, and they’re just as effective at brushing than your typical plastic toothbrush. Bamboo is also a renewable, sustainable material, therefore it won’t negatively impact the environment. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for plastic toothbrushes, as the petroleum used to make plastic is a limited resource.

Eco-Friendly Bamboo Toothbrushes

Our Bamboo Toothbrushes are perfect if you’re looking to create a more eco-friendly dental care routine. Some of its key features include:

  • BPA free
  • Blunted bristle tips ensure they do not cause tooth wear and abrasion
  • Cruelty free
  • Fully biodegradable
  • Sustainable and ethically sourced

2. Switch to Zero-Waste Toothpaste Tablets

Another key switch you can make is opting for zero-waste toothpaste tablets, which are small tablets housed in recyclable packaging or reusable jars.

Toothpaste tablets are just as effective as conventional toothpaste in a tube, they might just need a bit of getting used to at the start. To use one, simply pop it in your mouth, chew until it turns into a paste and brush with a wet toothbrush for a couple of minutes.

As well as the waste reduction, toothpaste tablets also offer benefits in terms of portability and resistance to temperature changes. This is great if travelling, as you won’t have to carry around bulky toothpaste tubes, nor do you have to worry about the paste going dry when they forget to close the cap.

Natural & Vegan Toothpaste Tablets

Our vegan toothpaste tablets are perfect for everyday use and great for your dental health. Their key benefits include:

  • Tubeless = plastic-free
  • Cruelty free
  • Made in the UK
  • Designed by dentists at Brush Fresh Co.
  • Great for oral health

3. Opt For Plastic-Free Floss

Eco-friendly dental products don’t stop there! You can also opt for plastic-free floss, which is typically made from silk and natural beeswax/plant wax, all of which is rapidly biodegradable.

Although you use just a small portion of dental floss after each use, all of those small strands of floss add up once they are placed in landfills, along with their plastic cases.

If floss isn’t for you, you can also look into water-flossing, which in fact removes just as much, if not more, plaque from teeth than conventional dental flossing does.

4. Save Water

Turning off the tap when brushing your teeth is by the far the easiest way you can create a more eco-friendly dental care routine. Keeping the tap on while brushing your teeth wastes an average of four gallons each time, according to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). By doing something so simple as turning off the tap when not in use, you can help to massively reduce this figure.

Another way you can further reduce water consumption is by not rinsing your mouth with water after brushing. As well as saving water, this is also a step recommended by dentists, since rinsing immediately after brushing will wash away the concentrated benefits in the toothpaste.

5. Use Your Toothbrush for Other Activities

When your bamboo toothbrush comes to the end of its brushing life, there are two options you can choose: compost it or repurpose it.

If you choose to compost it, begin with removing the bristles with pliers, then add the handle to your home composter or bury it in your garden soil. If you are without either of these, you can put the handle in your regular bin, but this isn’t advised as this will take much longer to biodegrade.

Alternatively, you may decide to use your bamboo toothbrush for other activities, such as cleaning stained tiles, muddy shoes, bike parts or retainers! Another popular use for old toothbrushes is plant markers - simply remove the bristles, mark the handle with a permanent marker and pop it in the plant.
