Are Bamboo Toothbrushes Hygienic?

Are Bamboo Toothbrushes Hygienic?

Yes — bamboo toothbrushes are hygienic, as long as you keep them clean. In fact, bamboo has natural antimicrobial properties that mean it reduces the presence of microbes, such as bacteria and mould.

To ensure your bamboo toothbrush remains hygienic and safe to use, rinse the bristles and use a clean towel to remove excess water between uses. You should also store your toothbrush in a container with drainage holes. Although toothbrush caps have been thought to "protect" your bristles in the past, these aid the growth of microorganisms, making your brush less hygienic and less safe.

If you'd like to give your brush some extra TLC, you can sanitize it in antibacterial mouthwash for 10-15 minutes. Or, work the brush through a water, vinegar and baking soda solution, before giving it a thorough rinse. Avoid putting your brush in the microwave or dishwasher to sanitize it, as this might impair its functional ability and long-term integrity.

Likewise, as per dentist's recommendation, you should replace your bamboo toothbrush every 2-3 months — or earlier if the bristles have worn down, the brush has grown mould, or you've been unwell. Instead of just throwing your brush when it is done, make sure to upcycle or compost it.

Are Bamboo Toothbrushes Safe?

Yes — bamboo toothbrushes are as safe as plastic toothbrushes, as long as they don't grow mould.

Bamboo is a naturally porous material, which means it holds on to moisture for a long time and is therefore more susceptible to mould. To prevent mould and keep your sustainable bamboo toothbrush safe, rinse and dry between uses, and replace every 2-3 months.

As set out above, bamboo does have antimicrobial properties which means it can help break up and eliminate bacteria better than a plastic toothbrush.

Bamboo toothbrushes are also safer for the environment. Compared to plastic toothbrushes — of which 264 million end up in landfill each year, and contribute to harmful plastic pollution — bamboo can be composted and is biodegradable. If you do choose to compost your brush, bamboo has large levels of silica which facilities photosynthesis and chlorophyll composition in plants! In short, it will help plants grow faster.
